Fly Ash mobile application named ASH TRACK launched {Energy}, {Digitalization}

Union Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy, Shri R.K Singh, launched a Web based monitoring System and a Fly Ash mobile application named ASH TRACK

These will help

These platforms will enable better management of the ash produced by thermal power plants by providing an interface between fly ash producers (Thermal Power Plants) and potential ash users such as – road contractors, cement plants etc.

It provides details like coal-based  plants in vicinity , Ash availability, distance from user’s location, details of a contact person to consumers and vice versa for power stations. It also shows ash utilization data and related trends

What is Fly ash?

Fly ash is fine sized end product of combustion of coal in coal-based thermal power plants, having several environmental concerns like air pollution contamination of water etc…

But at the same time Fly Ash  is a proven resource material for many applications of construction industries and currently is being utilized in manufacturing of Portland Cement, bricks/blocks/tiles manufacturing, road embankment construction and low lying area development, etc.

Indian coal contains much more ash content than coal form other countries , making the a strong case for sustainable management of fly ash

Google fined by CCI for ‘SEARCH BIAS’ {Cyber Crime}

In news

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) on Thursday imposed a Rs. 136 crore ($21.17 million) fine on Google for “search bias” and abuse of its dominant position

The CCI said Google, the search engine giant , was abusing its dominance in online Web search and online search advertising markets favoring its own services and partners.

The ruling has come on complaints filed by and Consumer Unity & Trust Society (CUTS)—back in 2012—against Google

Google has earlier  faced similar setbacks in EU and Russia

Google having about 90% share of search engine usage has got unquantifiable influence on Netizens, and hence any such manipulative action creates distortions in the market, contravening the ‘Free Market’ and leading to Monopoly.

Who’s CCI?

CCI is quasi-judicial statutory body established under The Competition Act, 2002

The Act prohibits anti-competitive agreements, abuse of dominant position by enterprises and regulates combinations (acquisition, acquiring of control and Merger and acquisition), which causes or likely to cause an appreciable adverse effect on competition within India.

In short it aims to eliminate practices that adversely affect competition in different industries and protect interests of consumers and ensure freedom of trade

Food for thought?

Considering the dominant position and influence, Should Google and Facebook be regulated?

 The Maldivian Crisis {International}

In an unexpected move last week, the Maldives Supreme Court ordered the release of several imprisoned opposition lawmakers, ruling that their trials were politically motivated.

President Abdulla Yameen refused to comply with the decision and instead imposed a state of emergency for a period of 15 days.

Following the emergency opposition leader and former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and judge Ali Hamid were arrested.

Ever since President Yameen came to power in 2013, he has been jailing almost all the political opposition. The island nation has been witnessing political unrest and street protests since former president Nasheed was convicted in 2015 on terror charges and sentenced to jail. This crisis is another episode in the troubled nation’s history, just before presidential elections due later this year

India’s  concern

India has joined the U.S., the European Union and several other countries in calling for Mr. Yameen to carry out the Supreme Court’s order. But India’s say over the Male administration has been on a downward spiral ever since the Presidency of Yameen.

The Yameen government is also known to have friendly relations with China much to the disadvantage of India

Thus the situation also brings up another India versus china angle, though indirectly, in the Indian Ocean region. Special care is to be taken as not to let open another frontier between the two nations, whilst trying to regain the lost ground in Maldives

NITI aayog releases “HEALTHY STATES, PROGRESSIVE INDIA” report {Health Issue}

In news

  • In an effort to better assess health outcomes across India, the NITI Aayog on Friday launched the Healthy States Progressive Report. The report is the first step to establish an annual systematic tool to measure and understand the complexity of nation’s performance in health.
  • The Index has been evolved through comprehensive study and inputs from World Bank India and the Ministry of Health
  • The absolute and incremental changes in health outcomes, as measured by the Health Index, promotes cross-learning between states
  • The three indicators which were factored in while ranking the states were health outcomes (70%), governance and information (12%) and key inputs and processes (18%), with each domain assigned a weight based on its importance.

Findings of the report

Among larger states, Kerala, Punjab and Tamil Nadu ranked on top in terms of overall performance, while Jharkhand, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh are the top three ranking states in terms of annual incremental performance.

Among smaller states, Mizoram ranked first followed by Manipur on overall performance, while Manipur followed by Goa were top-ranked states in terms of annual incremental performance,

The incremental measurement revealed that about one-third of the States, including the top-ranked Kerala, have registered a decline in their performance in 2016 as compared to 2015, stressing the need to pursue domain-specific, targeted interventions, while acknowledging that it is a challenge for States with high index scores to even maintain their  incremental performance

Common challenges for most States and UTs include the need to focus on addressing vacancies in key staff, establishment of functional district Cardiac Care Units, quality accreditation of public health facilities and institutionalization of Human Resources Management Information System.
