EU states could save almost €11 billion of their €220bn defence costs if they coordinated procurement, according to McKinsey analysts. Europe deploys 178 different weapons systems, compared to just 30 by the U.S.

An exclusive analysis by McKinsey & Company for the Munich Security Report 2017 assesses and compares the number of primary weapons system categories used by the armed forces of the United States and of European states.

Projections by IHS Jane’s Defence Budgets show that until 2020, security expenditures will barely rise in Western Europe but will increase by more than 3 percent annually, on average, in Eastern European countries.
