India 96th in FIFA World ranking, its best in 21 years

India has moved four places up to the 96th position in the FIFA World ranking. This is the country’s second best ranking — its previous best was the 94th position in February 1996.


  • India, which had been ranked 100th in the previous list released on June 1, has won two matches since the last list was published. This is also a huge confidence boost for the current squad which has moved 77 positions up from the 173rd rank on March 2015.
  • India has been averaging at the 134th rank since the creation of the world ranking system. Among Asian nations, Iran leads at No. 23, one ahead of Africa’s best, Egypt.
  • Germany tops the rankings again after the 2014 World Cup winner clinched the Confederations Cup title. Victory by a second-string squad lifted Germany up two places, while Brazil and Argentina fell to Nos. 2 and 3, respectively.
  • In the process, India is currently placed 12th in Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

The FIFA World Ranking

The FIFA World Ranking is a ranking system for men’s national teams in association football, are ranked based on their game results with the most successful teams being ranked highest. The rankings were introduced in December 1992.

The Mission 11 million

The Mission 11 million, a football initiative aimed towards taking the game to 12,000 schools in 37 cities across the country was set rolling by the Union Sports Minister Vijay Goel and the president of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) Praful Patel at the Nehru Stadium.
