Nuclear weapon stocks have fallen by more than two-thirds since their peak in the mid 1980s and the downward trend continues. Today, nine countries collectively possess approximately 15,000 warheads, with the United States and Russia accounting for more than 90 percent of them. U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has said he will propose offering to end sanctions imposed on Russia over its annexation of Crimea in return for a nuclear arms reduction deal with Moscow.
